What my pre-teen taught me about Social Media Engagement

Being a social media associate in an ad agency which believed in organic reach was not an easy post to get into. In the times of constant algorithm changes and paid advertising, increasing the organic reach of a well-established ad agency was a difficult task. I had to unlearn the latest in paid advertising on social media and educate myself about the basic beginnings of the social mediums. Whether it was the post reach on Facebook or the tags on Instagram and twitter or the right pages and handles to follow to gain a following for my agency’s pages, each day had become a constant plethora of likes and follows.

One such busy weekend, when I was wondering aloud why the followers I had painstakingly managed to gather were unfollowing, my pre-teen, smart-phone-carrying kid, made a dry remark about 'making sure you liked your followers posts regularly or they will think I am a duh!' Well, what an on-the-point statement that was. I was so busy posting “great” and “good” content on the social handles, that I had forgotten that social media is all about socializing. It is about conversations and discussions. It is about engaging our followers or I would rather say ‘virtual friends’. Like in the real world, your friends and colleagues and acquaintances will definitely give you a cold shoulder if you do not interact with them, when you see them, in the same way, if you do not keep your audience/followers engaged with whatever way of engagement you follow, they will leave.

This is what the world has shrunk into, a close-connect shell of virtual social interactions. Now, I make sure I follow my kid’s advice and amazingly, it has helped to increase the reach of my organisation, organically!
